The Diabetic Heart Lifestyle SystemTM is a vision we want to share for eating in a way that integrates all the limitations of diabetic heart patients. If you are diabetic, you already know that you need to make dietary changes, including limiting your consumption of sweets, as well as starchy and refined carbohydrates. But when you find out that on top of that, you have heart disease and need to limit your consumption of saturated fats and sodium, your next thought might be, “What’s left, broccoli and distilled water?” It’s overwhelming.
With the Diabetic Heart Lifestyle SystemTM we want you to focus less on the things you can’t have and more on the huge array of delicious things you can have! To put it another way, the Diabetic Heart Lifestyle SystemTM is a framework for integrating diabetic eating, heart healthy eating, and the real life process of changing your lifestyle.
We will start by suggesting what we call “core meals” that contain no added sodium, sugar, starchy carbs, or saturated fat. We emphasize “added,” because some of these substances occur naturally in foods. A stalk of celery has about 50 mg. of sodium!
The recipes we call core meals are seasoned and richly flavored without the use of added sodium, saturated fat, starchy carbs or sugars. These meals also make use of proteins that are lowest in saturated fat, such as poultry and fish.
The Diabetic Heart Lifestyle SystemTM is not a diet. With a diet, someone tells you what to do: how many calories or servings you can have, what foods to eat, and what to avoid. First, we will leave it to your doctor to tell you what to avoid. Our plan is to give you a vision for how you can implement what your doctor says to do. Most importantly, we don’t want you to just endure your eating lifestyle, we want you to enjoy and embrace it!
Your doctor will probably urge you to stay within prescribed levels of sugars, starchy or refined carbohydrates, sodium, and saturated or trans fats. The wise use of these allowances will greatly expand your range of foods! We also provide recipes that make limited use of allowances, but they are designed to use your allowances wisely. The key to remember is, if you build your eating lifestyle around core meals, adjustments to old favorites, and the well-planned use of your allowances, you’ll find it much easier to stay in compliance! Plus, you’ll be able to save more of your allowances for exceptions and splurges, which are inevitable.
